So I did a thing I never did before which is make an instrumental version of one of my songs. Some songs lose something without lyrics but not this one. Once again Dave Bell was my collaborative partner in the process.

We replaced the vocals in the intro with Dave's sweet guitar playing. Astute listeners will hear Karl Hartmann's additional bowed bass part underneath - a foreshadowing. I was hearing jazz violin to carry the rest of the melody so Dave hooked me up with the amazing Evan Price. The hard part was deciding which take to use, they were all perfect in different ways. We kept the rest of the band tracks including Natalie John's lovely muted horn. You know you're on the right track when spontaneous dancing breaks out in the control room during playback!

I always thought of myself as a lyricist first and a music writer second. So it's a little thrill to have written a song that works well with or without words. You may have your favorite version, I don't mind either way. Or collect the pair!
